Covid, CPAPs and Innovation! How Science Saves Lives
Our speaker, Professor Rebecca Shipley, leads the Institute of Healthcare Engineering at University College, London. Earlier this year she helped develop a new breathing device for Covid patients, called CPAP, which is now used in hospitals all around the world and reduces the need for many patients to be put on ventilators; initial reports suggest that approximately 50% of patients given CPAP avoid the need for invasive medical ventilation. Her team at UCL managed to develop this device in just 10 days! Professor Shipley will share with us her story of how she and her team at UCL collaborated with Formula One engineers at Mercedes-AMB HPP to develop CPAP and get it into hospitals so swiftly this year; she will also explain more about UCL’s Age Innovation Hub, where they are seeking ideas for how healthcare engineering can help older people stay socially connected, independent and healthy throughout the pandemic. Professor Shipley studied Maths at Oxford before beginning her career in healthcare engineering.
